Debit Card Overdraft "Service": As Though Government and Bankers Haven't Already Screwed Us Enough

At least my credit union isn't THIS disingenuous. Five months ago, Bank of America announced that it was no longer going to charge overdraft fees on debit card transactions.  On August 15, BOA, along with every other bank and credit union, will no longer have the option of not charging such fees if customers "opt in". I'm trying to figure out how this is better for me. Update: 8/2/2010 - 9:31 PM : On second thought, maybe my credit union is the problem. Update 8/3/2010 - 2:30 PM After all the confusion, fostered by the federal government, I am just fine.

GM's New Slogan: "You'll Love the New Governmental Motors"

The one good thing about the government's takeover of General Motors is that they won't have to change their logo very much. In fact, I've already fixed it for them. (see image, right). Governmental Motors has a short-term advantage in the auto market, but that will quickly turn out to be a disadvantage. If you thought that GM sucked when the government was sticking pins its voodoo doll from afar, just wait--it gets much worse. We've seen this movie before. Now that the United States government has purchased its first automobile company, they should be getting some words of advice from citizens of the former Soviet Union. Wait! The Russians just did give their input, unsolicited and with perfect timing. They said, not surprisingly, that we're much stupider than they were: It must be said, that like the breaking of a great dam, the American decent into Marxism is happening with breath taking speed, against the back drop of a passive, hapless sheeple, excuse me ...

TRICARE for Life: Is Obama Trying to Sucker Punch U.S. Veterans?

President Barack Obama's first budget proposal is a travesty. His first deficit is projected to be $1.8 trillion. The numbers could be worse except for potential nickel-and-diming of American servicemen and women. "Option 96" in the current Health Care budget proposal would reduce the cost to government of providing the Tricare for Life (TFL) program, but such a cost reduction would be a sucker punch to American veterans--especially those on fixed incomes. The Constitution of the United States lists only 18 things that the federal government can do. At last count, they were doing about 18 million things, but of the Thousands upon thousands of servicemen and women have answered the call of their country. A significant number of them have answered the call with their lives. You'd think their government would take care of them. original 18 federal responsibilities, several of them refer to defending our country. Such things as declaring war raising and supporting Arm...

How Did The Price of Oil Get So High? And Why Is It Now So Low? The "Enron Loophole"

It's beginning to look like we've reached the bottom as far as gas prices go. That's okay with me, as long as it doesn't return to previously exorbitant rates. I'd rather spend my money on products like books and restaurant food than gasoline whose price has become overly inflated due to speculation. I suspect, however, that prices won't get so high as they did a few months ago--at least not for the reasons that they did back then. That loophole has been closed. Update 11/30/2008 : I think it important to correctly identify for the financially flummoxed what laissez faire actually means. See below. Back in June, Republicans were It's more than coincidental that gasoline prices have gone down markedly since the Enron Loophole was closed on September 30th. claiming that oil prices had been on the rise because Democrats were blocking off-shore drilling, but they didn't talk much at all about the upward effect on prices due to speculation and the pri...
